Hi! (A Rhyming Animal Sounds Book) by Ethan Long. Published by Abrams Appleseed, an imprint of ABRAMS. Board book sized 7.5 x 7.5 inches. 20 pages, full-color illustrations. Publication date: May 5, 2015. Target age range 0 – 2 years old.
Hi! by Ethan Long is the first title in a new board book series focusing on animal (and human) first words.
Hi! is full of bright festive animals saying “hi!” in their own special rhyming ways! Each page spread features an animal on the left and an animal on the right. The only text is the speech bubbles which keeps the illustrations uncluttered. Readers also have a clear view of each animal’s environment.
I LOVE that Ethan Long included a few non-traditional animals — or better put, animals that typically aren’t featured in board books! The anteater is totally my favorite of the whole bunch! LOVE him!
There’s a yak in the book too! Such a hairy adorable guy! Who knows if yaks really grunt “yak” to say “hi!,” but come on, let’s not over-analyze this! Let’s just have fun rhyming instead!
For the second-to-last page spread, there is a square grid with images of all the animals plus the little boy — there are no speech bubbles. This page spread definitely invites kiddos to recall what sound each animal makes to say “hi!”
For last page spread, the left page shows the little boy saying “hi!” to his mom. The right page shows the little boy and mom looking directly at the reader and saying “good-bye!” What a clever ending!
