Swedish artist Maria Trolle, of Blomster Mandala fame, brings us a very special coloring book that is based on a children’s picture book she authored and illustrated, Vivi söker en vän (Vivi’s looking for a friend).
In Maria’s own words, she tells us all about the story: “When Vivi woke at dawn the walls were darker than usual and the house felt cramped. I want a friend, someone who is just mine, she thought. Vivi lives in a tree house in the woods. One day she goes on an adventure to find herself a friend. Vivi takes a ride with a bird and fly up into the sky where she meets the Cloudbear. She goes deep into the ocean where she meets a mermaid. In the oak, she becomes friends with the tree spirit. Vivi looks into hollows in the ground where the voles live. But who can be her very own friend who is hers always? The Miniwolf are also looking for a friend. He is curious about Vivi and wonders if she’ll ever see him. Vivi meets a friend is about finding your place in the world and to find yourself and meet the right person. A best friend.” (source: excerpted from Maria’s post on facebook)
The målarbok (coloring book) for Vivi söker en vän (Vivi’s looking for a friend) has black and white renderings of the picture book art along with an additional 28 illustrations!!!
Here are the målarbok (coloring book) specs:
** Softcover book measuring 8.5 x 10 inches
** 48 single-sided designs on perforated paper
** Paper is thicker than the paper used in the Blomster Mandala coloring book (that’s Munken Pure 160 gsm) but is thinner than the paper from the poster book (Artist Edition)
** Art is more detailed than the art in Blomster Mandala
Below is a silent video flick-through of Vivi söker en vän (Vivi’s looking for a friend) — you can click the arrows in the bottom right hand corner of the video screen and make it full size.
WHERE TO BUY: Vivi söker en vän is published by Swedish publisher Pagina Förlag. The best place to pick up a copy is right here from Pen Store, a retail and online shop based out of Sweden that ships to many countries including the USA, Canada, and the UK.
When ordering online from Pen Store or other Swedish shops, be alert and careful as there may be different formats for the same book — there are coloring books (Målarbok), Artist Editions (Tavelbok), and postcard collections (Vykort). And especially in the case of Vivi söker en vän where there is both a coloring book and picture book, make sure the book cover has the word målarbok on the cover. When in doubt, use google translate to help!
If you were hoping to pick up both the picture book (it is written in Swedish and not English) and coloring book in the same shopping trip, you’ll need to wait a wee bit longer as, at the time of this post, Pen Store does not have the picture book listed on their site. The picture book has not sold out, it just hasn’t been listed yet, so keep checking!
At the time of this post, you will not find either version of Vivi söker en vän listed on Amazon USA or Amazon UK because no US (or UK) publisher has acquired publishing rights.
ANOTHER NEW COLORING BOOK BY MARIA TROLLE: Maria *just* published I Bring You Flowers — a collection of 20 greeting card postcards to color. At the time of this post, I Bring you Flowers is currently sold-out on Pen Store but keep
stalking checking the page!
Disclosure: I received a complimentary book from the publisher. I was not required nor obligated to write a review. The opinions are my own.
