Pusheen the Cat is totes adorbs but, and I feel like a curmudgeon for saying this, that cuteness can only take you so far. I’m just not that impressed with the Pusheen Coloring Book. I wanted to be. I expected to be. I LOVE coloring books with cute imagery. But alas, me + Pusheen Coloring Book was just not a coloring book love connection.

For starters, the Pusheen Coloring Book opens up with a wallpaper design (also referred to as a repeating pattern). The opening image choice is an important one as it often sets the tone for the rest of the book. Depending on how you feel about wallpaper images you will either be saddened or overjoyed that there are plenty more to follow.

In addition to wallpaper designs, the coloring book features two other types of designs: mandalas and images featuring Pusheen in a variety of settings. The pages featuring Pusheen (not wallpaper or mandala) are quite simple in design, are done in very thick inky line, and have very large components to color.

Many of the designs include pre-inked black areas — mostly markings on Pusheen’s body but there are other design elements that are pre-inked too like the sushi (nori sheets), the tops of acorns (cupules), and sunglasses, just to name a few.

The Pusheen Coloring Book has 96 pages which seems to be the standard length for coloring books in the USA. However, IMHO many of the designs are quite similar to each other. I would have liked the Pusheen Coloring Book a lot more (even the wallpaper images) if the images were more carefully curated and there were actually less pages.

The books is sized 10 x 10 inches and is glue bound. Images are printed on both sides of the page. The paper itself is smooth and white and has a satisfactory weight — it’s not quite medium-weight paper but it’s heavier than copier/printer paper.

What do you think about the Pusheen Coloring Book? Does cuteness conquer all?

  1. Laura Bagby says:

I agree: you can only take Pushteen so far. Maybe as far as the second page.

  2. I totally agree with both of you!! Is this seriously marketed as an adult coloring book? It’s more like something i would see at the dollar store in the little kids coloring book section! Not something I’d waste even a dollar on for my 7 yr old grand daughter! She prefers the same adult coloring books that I do!

    • Honestly, I’m not sure if Pusheen is being marketed as an adult coloring book or not. It’s published by Touchstone and they publish all sorts of stuff — they are not known as a children’s book imprint. As I write this comment to you, Amazon says the Pusheen Coloring Book is a #1 Best Seller in Cat Care!

That’s great that you and your granddaughter color together and that she likes the same books that you do 🙂
