I’d like to introduce you to Finnish artist Maria Ljungeld and her very first coloring book, Min Mandala (My Mandala), published by our favorite Swedish publisher, Pagina Förlag. In Min Mandala, Maria has completed redefined the nature of what a mandala can be. Maria’s book is full of edgy, hip, modern, and visually intriguing mandalas.
My most favorite mandala in the book actually gives me the heebie-jeebies even though I’m not even seated in the dentist’s chair! Can you virtually feel the pain?! YOWZA!
But there are plenty of other mandalas in the book that aren’t going to freak you out 😉
Truthfully, I’m not sure what a some of the mandalas are supposed to be but I can appreciate their mysterious nature and will continue to mull over the possibilities.
Min Mandala is sized nearly 10 x 10 with 96 pages. Pagina Fölrag uses Munken Pure 160 gsm paper in all their coloring books.
All the art is hand drawn and there is a charming wobbliness at times. The final four pages include templates so you can try your own hand at creating mandalas.
Below is a silent video flick-through of Min Mandala — you can click the arrows in the bottom right hand corner of the video screen and make it full size.
When ordering online from Pen Store or other Swedish shops, be alert and careful as there may be different formats for the same book — there are coloring books (Målarbok), Artist Editions (Tavelbok), and postcard collections (Vykort). When in doubt, use google translate to help!
At this time, Min Mandala is not listed on Amazon USA or Amazon UK because no US (or UK) publisher has acquired reprinting rights.
Disclosure: I received a complimentary book from the publisher. I was not required nor obligated to write a review. The opinions are my own.
